The Guardian UK news organization is having a beast
of a time figuring out the interplay between all the different
financial vehicles and assests that house the many millions of pounds
that the former prime minister has earned since he left office in 2007.
So they've posted to their website all the relevant documents, and are
asking tax specialists and accountants in particular to help them make sense of the structures
and why someone like Blair might want to store his money in such a
fashion. Somewhat strangely, this is structured as a contest, rather
than some sort of experiment in collaborative journalism. The grand
prize is a prized cartoon. More:
The former prime minister Tony Blair
has received millions of pounds through an unusual mixture of
commercial, charitable and religious income streams. Since he stepped
down from office in 2007, his financial affairs have been described by
observers as "Byzantine" and "opaque". The Guardian is now launching an
online competition offering a prize to the person who can shine the
brightest light on those financial structures.
